Hearts of Steel: Chapter 4

When I stepped off the plane, I thought about all of those comedy movies and cartoons where the frightened passenger throws himself on the ground and kisses it - promising never to fly again. It didn't seem so funny to me then, or farfetched. If it weren't for having to lug these bears all the way down to the passenger pickup area, I would have been down on my knees, thanking the Maker for allowing me to come through in one piece.

I suppose, in a small way, I should thank Him for Jack Deneen, too. If it weren't for Jack talking to me, calming me down, and even on occasion making me laugh, I would have been a nervous wreck. Or worse, carried off the plane heavily sedated like that crazy guy from that Twilight Zone  episode who saw a gremlin, bent on mass destruction, harassing him on the wing of the plane.

Photo: The Obamas' Trip to Former Slaving Port in Senegal

President Barack Obama has spent the afternoon touring a Senegalese Island where Africans were shipped across the Atlantic into slavery and he called the visit a 'very powerful moment.' Obama says visiting Goree Island Thursday with his family helps them fully appreciate the magnitude of the slave trade. They toured the museum at the Maison des Esclaves where slaves were gathered before going through the 'Door of No Return' and being forced onto ships bound for North America.

How to Create Your Own Clothing Line

Do you dream of starting your own clothing line?

To be successful, you'll have to learn how to run a business, market your products, and keep your customers happy. Here are some basics on getting started in the clothing and fashion business.

Step 1: Create a solid and clear business plan. Your business plan needs to lay out how you intend to manage your clothing line. Try to be as realistic as possible when you write this. Remember, it's better to underestimate your profits and be pleasantly surprised than to overestimate your abilities and be disappointed. Think about these aspects: -Funding -Costs -Research(what is current) -Profitability(part time or full time business) -Legalities(partnership) -Employees -Choose a brand name -Design a logo.

Step 2: Design the clothes .This is the fun part for many people, but it's only 10-15 percent of the process! Make sketches, get feedback, and decide which ones will constitute your first collection. Pick out fabrics and materials that are cost effective and current.

Step 3:  Create a website to promote your clothing line. Make sure it looks very professional and presents your line in the best light. Provide contact information, in case stores or other merchants want to get in touch with you. If you want to give people the ability to buy clothing from your website, you'll need to set up a shopping cart and merchant account so you can accept credit card payments.

Step 4.Promote your line- advertise it. Tell people, put it in newspapers and magazines. Make people aware that it exists.

I hope this was helpful. See you at the top!

Hearts of Steel - Chapter Three

"See you on the other side," he said, then touched my shoulder in passing. My heart skipped up into my throat, beating so loudly that I didn't trust myself to speak. So I just nodded, and made myself extremely occupied with adjusting the seat-belt buckles on my bears.

Did he notice how he affected me? Could he tell how my fingers shook? They didn't feel like my own hands.

. . .Come on, Priye. Get a grip on yourself, girl. He wasn't all that. He probably didn't even mean to touch your shoulder. It was an accident, an incidental touching as he grabbed the back of the seat. . .

Hearts of Steel - Chapter 2

"See you on the other side." I waved to Paul and Priscilla as they disappeared down the ramp. Over her shoulder, Priscilla blew me a kiss, then wrapped her arm around Paul. Hip-to-hip, they took their place among the other Gold Pass first-class customers. They took their seats. My first-class seat.

Why was I complaining? Let Priscilla have it. It was going to take more than money to bring some class to that woman. I loved Paul like a brother. He was my teammate, my drinking buddy, my confidant. There wasn't anything I wouldn't do for him...except tell him the truth about his lady.

Correction. His wife. Priscilla was his wife now. He wouldn't believe me if I told him anyway. Or maybe he would believe me and wind up hating me for forcing him to see the truth. If I were in Paul's shoes, I don't know if I could choose between my woman and my best friend.

Hearts of Steel - Chapter 1

"I want it, Mommy! Please...please...pleeeeeeze!"

I pretended that I couldn't see or hear the little boy sitting across from me in his mama's lap, squirming and begging to be set free. He'd already broken the child safety harness that was supposed to rein him in. As the plastic toy football sailed past my head yet a third time, I turned up the volume of my MP3 player and tried not to glare at him.

Now, where was that magazine I'd picked up at the airport gift shop? I'd better not have lost it. The thing might've cost me three times the regular newsstand price. Where do they get off charging that much for a magazine? For that kinda money, the pages had better be edged in gold.

Hearts of Steel - Prologue

Prologue

Football sucks. It has to be the most idiotic game ever invented. No, I take that back. I think that game where the moderator exclaims "Its a 3-pointer!" takes the prize for idiocy. But football runs a close second.

I'm not talking about football, otherwise known as soccer. Noted players like Pele can make even bouncing a ball on top of their heads look sophisticated.

Am I ready for some football? No, Never. Not even if you paid me. Before you jump into conclusions, let me be the first to say that I know what the game is all about. Nobody can accuse me, Priye Cole, of letting ignorance prejudice my thinking. That is, I know how the game is played. I know how many players are supposed to be on the field. I know the players positions. I understand the mechanics of the game.
